Performing Arts

Speedway School is dedicated to the incorporation of the Performing Arts within our students curriculum. The Arts are valued as a core subject. We believe the Arts educate the whole child. The Arts helps develop self discipline, cooperative learning, cross curricular exploration and work readiness skills.

Dance

Speedway was one of three schools to implement the elementary dance program in Newark Public Schools. Students are exposed to various dance genres including, Modern, Ballet, African, Tap, Creative Movement. Along with exposure to dance genres middle school students partake in dance history and stage production classes Students participate in school and district wide performances. Numerous alumni continue to further their dance education at Arts High and other Performing Arts institutions. Students have received talent scholarships at Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Garden State Ballet and NJPAC. Students have been selected to perform before the Newark Arts Council and a private performance for Alvin Ailey's former Artistic Director, Judith Jamison.
