About Our School
Welcome to Bard High School Early College Newark! BHSEC Newark opened in September 2011 as a collaboration between Bard College and the Newark Public Schools. At BHSEC Newark, we offer a unique educational experience that allows students to earn an Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree alongside their high school diploma. Our rigorous curriculum, led by college-level faculty, is designed to challenge and inspire students to think critically, write effectively, and engage deeply with their studies.
Whether you're a prospective student or a current family, we invite you to join our vibrant learning community, where academic excellence and personal growth go hand in hand. Together, we empower students to realize their full potential and prepare for success in college and beyond.
Dear BHSEC Newark Community,
It is with great excitement and deep gratitude that I introduce myself as the new principal of Bard High School Early College Newark.
As a proud graduate of urban public schools and a first-generation college student, I know firsthand the transformative power of educational opportunity and supportive learning communities. Over the past 20 years, I have dedicated my career to expanding equity and access for all students — as a teacher, researcher, program evaluator, and higher education leader. I began as a middle school English teacher and have since served in roles ranging from classroom educator to assistant professor and doctoral program coordinator. My work has focused on student achievement, instructional quality, and school improvement, including research on after-school and extended learning programs.
My commitment to data-informed, student-centered leadership embodies the mission of Newark Public Schools to provide all young people with a high-quality, equitable education. Equally, my belief in empowering young people through authentic college study embodies Bard’s mission to transform the high school-to-college pathway and provide equitable, tuition-free access to a liberal arts education. At BHSEC Newark, a proud partnership between Bard College and Newark Public Schools, I am dedicated to supporting incredible faculty and staff and collaborating with families and community partners to ensure every student is known, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential. Together, we will continue to build a supportive, inclusive, and vibrant community where every student can thrive in college and beyond.
I look forward to meeting each of you and working together to continue building a school community that reflects our shared values and aspirations. Let’s make this year — and every year — one of growth, connection, and achievement for all.
With gratitude and excitement,
Rafael Inoa, PhD
Principal
