On Friday January 17th, Peshine Avenue School celebrated the legacy of Dr Martin Luther King with their annual Day of Service. Each year the school’s Community Engagement Specialist Mr. Sami Armstrong under the leadership of Principal Rufai and along with the dedicated team, organize an incredible group of community volunteers to spend the morning reading to students. Volunteers from the city of Newark and beyond dedicated their time to give back to the community. The volunteers came from all walks of life, from retired teachers to State Police, local business owners, Board of Education members, our very own South Ward Councilman Pat Council and esteemed Judge Sybill . The volunteers were welcomed by Principal Rufai before heading to the classrooms to read books about the great Dr. Martin Luther King and share memories and experiences of being students themselves. Many of the volunteers were once students at Peshine Ave. Elementary School and were in awe of all the incredible things that are happening in their old elementary school.
