Description: SUMMARY FINDINGS East Side High School is currently structured as a comprehensive high school. The 2012 facility condition assessment survey finds this school to be in POOR physical condition, based mainly on the antiquated original 1911 structure that is over a century old, 84 year old addition, and a newer 30 year old addition that is now showing signs of aging. A number of the building elements and systems in the 1911 and 1928 wings are obsolete and in poor condition, including the exterior walls, floors and ceiling, as well as, HVAC systems and emergency generator. Additionally, the Educational Adequacy of the Classrooms and Special Spaces are GOOD, with only the Media Center space undersized and inadequate based on the NJDOE Facilities Educational Standards (FES). This school will require substantial investment to remedy deferred maintenance deficiencies and modernize the building to serve as a 21st Century learning environment. The 2005 LRFP recommended replacing East Side High with a new building on a new site to serve the overcrowded Iron Bound neighborhood, and then converting the existing building to house PK to 8 students. It is recommended that East Side High School be replaced as described above as part of the 2012 long range plan, and that the existing building either be full renovated and re-purposed.
