Avon Avenue School Monthly Traveling Perfect Attendance Trophy

School Admin & Attendance Counselor Kick-Off New Initiative To Boost School Attendance

On this day of love, Attendance Counselor Ms. Street, kicked off our Monthly Attendance Champions Initiative. This initiative was developed with the purpose of encouraging students to come to school every day. 

Every month each homeroom will have their daily attendance tabulated, and the home room that amasses the most days of PERFECT attendance over a one month period will get to host the Monthly Attendance Trophy.

“This initiative not only encourages students to be here and ready to learn on a daily basis, but creates space for a little friendly competition,” shared Kinyetta Bird, school Principal. 

And a friendly competition it shall be, because it will be up to all of the other home rooms to dethrone the previous month's traveling trophy host. 

The inaugural host of the Monthly Attendance Traveling Trophy is, Ms. Lewis’ 3rd Grade homeroom. During the month of January the homeroom racked up a total of seven days of perfect attendance, beating out Mr. Harris’ 7th grade homeroom by 2 days. 

Mr. Harris is no stranger to winning, not only is he 7th grade Math & Science teacher, but he’s also the head coach of the 2024 -2025 NBOE Elementary School Boys Basketball Champions.

When asked what he’ll do to claim the title Coach Harris shared, “I am going to have to start sliding the importance of coming to school everyday into my lesson commentary, and maybe even having a treat basket for those who come in on time to encourage students and to enhance the friendly competition. make coming to school every single day, apart of my 

Although, two students were absent during today’s presentation, when asked how she and her home room will retain their current title Ms. Lewis expressed that she will, “continue to  communicate with parents and guardians daily, and provide a high level of teaching to her students.”  She continued by sharing that, “I teach with a lot of love & compassion, which makes my students want to be here and I will continue to find fun and innovative ways to help them enjoy wanting to become smarter. 

 

With over thirty homerooms at Avon Avenue School, we may be in for one of the most intense battles for Attendance Supremacy ever known to man.

That’s right Avon Avenue School is going PINK!

With the 30th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, just 19 days away, school administrators announce two major ways that the school community will celebrate this milestone event.

Via their Facebook & Instagram pages, Avon unveiled their 2024-2025 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer logo.

“We are deeply committed to honoring the lives lost and celebrating the Warrior Spirit of all those battling cancer. Our new logo stands as a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope for a future free of cancer," shared Principal Kinyetta Bird.

The logo will also adorn t-shirts worn by the Avon Avenue Team at this years Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, October 20th, at Mulberry Commons in Newark, NJ.

Former Arts High School Principal, Devonne DeNose, now Director of Visual & Performing Arts for the Newark Board of Education made her 1st Official School visit to the Home of The Rams. During her visit she toured our BRAND NEW Dance Class with Principal Bird, paid a visit to Avon’s “Little Songbird” Taylor Earl, and engaged in an encouraging conversation with our enrichment team.

Newark Board of Education Hosts Thrilling Elementary Basketball Event

Avon Avenue Boys Basketball Team; Mount Vernon Girls Basketball Team; Science Park MS Boys Basketball Team; South Street Elementary Girls Basketball Team

Excitement filled the air at Weequahic High School on Thursday, May 22nd, as the Newark Board of Education hosted an exhilarating elementary basketball event. The atmosphere was electric as the girls' game unfolded, with Mount Vernon emerging victorious in a hard-fought battle against Elliot Street School. Meanwhile, in the boys' game, Avon Avenue School narrowly clinched a victory over Thirteenth Avenue Elementary School, showcasing their determination and skill.

These closely contested games were a testament to the impressive talent of the young athletes who participated. The local community came out in full force to support their teams, creating a vibrant and encouraging atmosphere that truly captured the spirit and unity of Newark.

The 2024 elementary basketball season also introduced the Rising Stars divisions, featuring first-year programs. On May 15th, the Rising Stars championship games took place at Arts High School. In the girls' division, South Street emerged triumphant over Lincoln, while in the boys' championship game, Science Park secured a victory against Franklin.

These thrilling matchups showcased the rising stars of Newark's elementary basketball scene, highlighting the dedication and passion of these young athletes. As the season came to a close, the community celebrated their achievements and looked forward to the bright future of basketball in Newark.

DREAMers Honored as “Students for the Day”

Avon Avenue School DREAMers Honored as "Students for the Day"

Weequahic High School, Newark, NJ

Thursday, May 21st, Weequahic High School honored three Avon Avenue School DREAMers as "Students for the Day".

The "Student for a Day" program at Weequahic High School aims to provide students from Avon Elementary School with a firsthand experience of a typical day in the Intellectually Disabled (ID) program. This immersive experience allows them to follow the traditional schedule of students in the ID program, engage in discussions with Child Study Team (CST) members to address their needs and ensure Individualized Education Program (IEP) compliance, participate in presentations from various departments, interact with peers in the ID program, and have a casual chat with Principal Thomas and Department Chair Phillips. 

DREAMers were given the full " Weequahic Indian Experience" from classroom visits to Peer Interactions, as well as, a discussion on how the Child Study Team will be supporting their needs through their IEP in their new school environment. Incoming Freshman Muraad Taylor called the visit to Weequahic High, "A really good time'. I even found out that my cousin goes there." He also shared, "I'm really looking forward to going there next school year."

Principal Bird & Principal Thomas both acknowledge the visit as, "An opportunity to create an inclusive environment and a "real-time" look at the space where they will learn, interact, and grow together over the next few years."
