Malcolm Terrell

Mr. Malcolm Terrell

Principal

Mr. Malcolm Terrell was born and raised in Newark, NJ. He grew up in the Terrell Homes projects in the east ward where he attended Hawkins St School during his elementary years and Science High School for his secondary education.

Mr. Terrell attended Temple University in Philadelphia , PA and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer and Information Sciences . After receiving his degree, he worked as an assistant director and a director of a non profit afterschool program in Philadelphia. After making impact with students in Philadelphia, Mr. Terrell knew it was time to go back home and inspire the youth in the city of Newark. In 2008, Mr. Terrell moved back to Newark and began his career in education as an 8th grade math teacher at George Washington Carver School. He taught 7 years at George Washington Carver and 1 year at Ivy Hill school.

In 2011, Mr. Terrell was inspired by a co teacher to enroll in Masters Program partnership sponsored by the Newark Teachers Union and Seton Hall University.He received his Master of Arts degree in Educational Leadership from Seton Hall in 2013. Mr. Terrell continued to teach math for 3 more years and decided he wanted to make a broader impact on teaching and learning so he pursued a Vice Principal position. Mr Terrell was hired as a vice principal at Belmont Runyon school where he worked for 2 years and then became VP at Carver/Bruce in 2018.

Mr. Terrell is known for his positive energy, ability to inspire, systems thinking and his undying connection and care for students, staff and the community. He is a firm believer that all students can and will learn and that students should have a platform to share their talents, thoughts and creativtiy.

In addition to his full-time role within the Newark Board of Education, Mr. Terrell is a father to two beautiful children.

John Gabriel

Mr. John Gabriel

Vice Principal - Grades 6-8

John Gabriel earned a bachelor's degree from Kean University, 3 teaching certificates, a Master's of Arts in School Administration/Educational Leadership from the College of St. Elizabeth with 2 administrative certificates. He taught fourth and fifth grades for 3 years and then moved to the secondary level to teach Language Arts Literacy (LAL) first in middle school and then in high school. With over 21 years of experience in the field of education, John Gabriel has served as a substitute teacher, permanent substitute teacher, classroom teacher, supervisor of humanities in grades 9-12, and a VP at the high school and elementary and middle school levels. He is passionate about teaching and learning and holds deep conviction that all children can and will learn, but children will learn at different rates.

Mrs. Teresa Mitchell

Vice Principal - Grades 3-5

Teresa Mitchell is a passionate educator who began her career with the Newark Public School’s a per diem paraprofessional. It was at that time that she developed a love for teaching and learning. She prides herself for creatively facilitating highly effective practices throughout her tenure as an educator. After over 18 years of teaching experiences across various grade levels spanning from Kindergarten to 8th grade, she developed a desire to lead. Understanding that quality mentorship, strategic guidance and tailored supports are critical for student achievement, she accepted a call to leadership. It is her firm belief that ALL students can achieve when equipped with the learning resources needed for success!

Mrs. Cristina Balboa

Vice Principal - Grades Pre K-2

Cristina Balboa, a proud Newark Public Schools alumna, has been dedicated to educating and inspiring students in the district since 2005. She holds a Master’s in English Language Arts from New Jersey City University and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Montclair State University. With her strong academic background and deep commitment to student success, Cristina strives to bring a culture of academic excellence, inclusivity, and student-centered learning to the George Washington Carver/Bruce community. She is passionate about fostering a supportive and engaging environment where all students have the tools and opportunities to reach their highest potential.
