About Our School

Camden Street Elementary School is located in Newark’s Central Ward. Built in 1968, it houses approximately six hundred students ranging from three to thirteen years of age.

Camden’s special needs program houses approximately 280 students. These students live throughout the City of Newark, and are transported to Camden by bus. Opportunities for integrating classified students into a least restrictive environment are accomplished through inclusion and mainstreaming. Our goal is to meet the various needs of all. To accomplish this task, we provide students with whole group and individual learning experiences.

Academic success is the mission of Camden Street Elementary School’s staff. The strategy used to achieve this goal is through high expectations and realistic goals. High expectations are communicated to the students by the teachers letting them know specifically what they are expected to learn, and that they can learn.

Welcome Letter

Dear Parents, Faculty and Community Supporters:

The 21st Century world is a direct result of innovation, and men and women of vision and creativity are responsible for its design. It is a world driven by knowledge, technology and a global economy. It is the world our children, the children at Camden Street School, must be prepared to enter. It follows then, that in order for our students to succeed in this modern world they must not only have dreams, but they must also have the knowledge and skills required to realize their dreams.

The leaders of tomorrow, however, are not born, they are made. The process requires commitment, determination, perseverance, and, most of all, belief - belief that what happens in a school, rather than the circumstances around the school, determines whether the students succeed. I recognize that not all students who enter Camden will come with dreams and goals, but I guarantee that with your help, they will all leave with them. As a community of stakeholders, we all have the responsibility to inspire our children to be dreamers. If we fail to do so, what will be the legacy we leave to our children? The daily challenges our children and families face are unrelenting and ever increasing, but we cannot allow these circumstances to define them or our work. We know that all students can succeed, and it is our responsibility to ensure that all students do succeed.

The doors of Camden Street School are now open as a school to help kids achieve their dreams. The next generation will be poised to cease a successful future. Please join me as we make Camden Street School a school of excellence, which will produce dreamers - visionary, creative scholars who will transform themselves, their community and even the world. Let us all believe that as a result of our collective effort, CAMDEN will truly come to mean - Commitment to Achievement Making the Dream of Every Child a New Reality!

Sam Garrison, Principal

Hello Camden Parents!

We are truly grateful to be able to serve you and your children and we would like to thank you for making Camden possible!  We know it has been a very difficult year and similar to Thanksgiving we would like to make it a little brighter by bringing hope and good cheer.

We are excited to let you know that we have gift bags for you, one per family which will include at least 4 toys, clothes, books, and the coolest neon blue earbuds ever.  But we are not done! No sir, we will have a raffle because someone very generous donated 2 new laptops to the Camden Street School.  When you pick up your gift we will give you a raffle ticket.  We will announce the two winners of the laptops on Tuesday December 22nd.

The winners will be able to pick up their prizes on December 23rd by 1pm.  In order to be safe kindly adhere to wearing a mask when coming as well as the following pick up schedule starting Monday December 14th students whose last name begins with (A-C), Tu (students D-H), W (Students I-O), Th (Students P-S), and Friday (Students last names beginning with T-Z).  Monday December 21st will be for emergency pickups only.  The pick up time period is (9am to 2:30pm).  Also, please note we are unable to match the sizes of clothes or gender due to the pandemic and time restraints.  Our hope is that extended family or friends may be able to benefit from the kind gesture if you are unable to. As always, there is no Camden without you and your children so thank you.  Principal Garrison
