Deaf EXPO 2025
Jun 13, 2025
On June 11, 2025 Bruce Street School for the Deaf hosted their second annual Deaf Expo. This special day not only celebrates Deaf culture but also provides access to supports for our students and their families. This year‘s theme was an ASL Jam that featured students and staff performances that ranged from poetry, dance, interpretive signing, comedy, and much more. Special guest and Newark Poet Laureate, Mia X, performed her poem “A Teal Bo Around an Orchid” and cheered on all of the students during their moving performances.
The day started with greetings from Newark Public Schools Superintendent Roger Leon and other OSE staff as we welcomed over 15 vendors that service the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Vendors such as the National Hispanic Latino Association of the Deaf (NHLAD), T-Mobile accessibility, Access mental health from St. Joseph’s, New Jersey relay, and many others were available to share information to the parents and visitors to promote Deaf advocacy. Following the vendor session was our showcase of the students talents for all of the parents and visitors to enjoy, and they did not disappoint! We ended the day with a wonderful brunch celebration for all in attendance.
