Guidelines for Acquiring Free Internet Access at Home During CORVID-19 Crisis

Major telecommunication companies are offering free Internet Services during the CORVID-19 Crisis. Below are three options for free Internet Access offered by Altice, USA which is the Telecommunications Company covering the city of Newark.

Option 1 (For district Chromebooks being used at home for remote learning)
This option is referred to as Student Wifi by Altice and is offered to schools and not to individual users. This option requires all devices to be registered in advance. All District Chromebooks have already been registered for this Internet Access method and will work when students connect their devices to “optimumwifi” SSID.

Newark School students who have received their Chromebooks from their schools are to use this option as their Internet Connection. They will need to select and connect to “optimumwifi” wireless network. No password will be required since their devices have already been registered. Instructions for connecting the devices to Optimum Wifi have been sent home with the Chromebooks.

Option 2 (Open to everyone for free for 60 days – No Credentials Needed)
This option involves the use of Altice wifi Hotspots where available and is open to everyone for a period of 60 days. Users simply search for Wireless Network and select “optimumwifi-emergency” wireless network if it shows up on their list. Any wireless device can be connected to this Wireless Network. This is an open wireless and does not require any credentials to login.

Option 3 (For homes that don’t have Internet Services – Must contact Altice)
This option is for families that do not currently have Internet Access at home. Altice is offering to install Internet in homes for free for a period of 60 days. Families are to contact Altice at 866-200-9522 to enroll in the Optimum 30MB plan that is being offered. This option requires visit to the homes by Altice technicians so the necessary Internet routers can be installed. Arrangements for home visits are to be made between families and Altice.
