Art

In the month of March in Art class, Mrs. Maglio incorporated literacy into her lessons by introducing the artist and author Dr. Seuss to our Star Pre-K and 1st grade Artists. Our Pre-K artists focused on a section of The Lorax and discussed its art components. They designed their own Truffula Trees using markers and coffee filters. They sprayed their artwork with water and noticed how the colors blended into each other which is called Chromatography. Our 1st Grade artists looked at drawings of The Cat In The Hat and learned how to use specific elements of art to draw the cat!

Math is also being introduced to many of our budding artists by using symmetry. Students learned about the line of symmetry and how this means an object is exactly the same on both sides. A common shape that is symmetrical is a heart which is what they painted and designed. They were fascinated to see how painting one side of the paper and folding it in half causes the exact same lines and shapes to be printed on the other side!

Computers

For the month of March, for Read Across America Day, Star Technicians in 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade wrote about what they wanted to be when they grew up during Computer Class. They created sticky notes on a Jamboard activity. Star Technicians were able to demonstrate keyboarding and mouse skills while they were highly engaged in this activity. Ms. Patel modeled to the stars how to add a sticky note to the Jamboard. The assignment was added to Google Classroom. Star Technicians enjoyed the process of using the Jamboard platform.

Physical Education

In the month of March the Physical Education Team Ms. Martinho along with Mr. Chapman integrated literacy by incorporating Dr. Seuss themed station activities based on selected books written by Dr. Seuss. Our star athletes demonstrated basic fundamental gross motor skills to complete specific skills and tasks. Also, continuing in the month of March, the Physical Education Team integrates math with every warm up activity that our star athletes participate in during their daily TABATA Fitness Exercises.

World Language

For the month of March, in World Language class, Mrs. Amaral integrated literacy during a read aloud to honor Dr. Seuss and Read Across America to our STAR Students.  We directed our attention to an anchor chart and reviewed the specific vocabulary before reading.  The STAR students participated in the discussion and were eager to listen to the read aloud.  We read “Separate Is Never Equal” and integrated specific vocabulary such as, Diversity, Segregation, and Discrimination in both English and Spanish.  After the read aloud, the students felt a strong connection with the story and shared examples of moments they felt discriminated against and how Diversity was not present in some everyday life moments.  They really understood that Diversity is to include everyone no matter what!  Our STAR students embraced literacy in both languages and have enjoyed exploring the shared bilingual library.
