Office of Early Childhood Preschool Instructional Expectations (PIE)

In order to ensure a high quality preschool education that offers support and resources to stimulate and sustain preschoolers' emergent skills through Pre-K and beyond, the Preschool Instructional Expectations (PIE) was developed. PIE is a one stop place for administrators, faculty and the Office of Early Childhood staff to access the non-negotiable beliefs that underpin the interdisciplinary approach to learning. Tied to this is the adoption of the state approved researched based The Creative Curriculum for Preschool- Sixth Edition throughout the district schools and collaborative sites

Office of Early Childhood Health Services

October 1, 1902, the first school nurse Lina Rogers Struthers began working in New York City to help reduce the high absentee rate in school. Since that time, school nursing as evolved to all states.

Today, the Office of Early Childhood has a team of School Nurses specialized in providing school health services to both Community Based Providers and Newark Board of Education's Early Childhood Centers. Our Nurses are committed to creating and sustaining a high quality preschool program which supports the development of the whole student and meets the individual health needs of each student.

Our goal is to encourage appropriate health care and offer preventative health services by conducting preventative care health screenings. The Office of Early Childhood is committed to creating and sustaining a high quality preschool program which supports the development of the whole student and meets the individual health needs of each student.

We encourage and support positive interactions between family, school, and the community, and respect the role of the family as the primary teachers of students. Through these commitments and partnerships, preschool students will have increased opportunities to become productive citizens and eager, life long learners of education and health practices.

Family and Community Engagement

Everyone benefits when families, schools, and community are invested in the school district’s implementation of the preschool program. Schools enjoy the informed support of families and community members, and families experience many opportunities to contribute to their children’s education.

Program Quality

The Newark Board of Education Office of Early Childhood Program Quality initiatives include site monitoring and classroom assessments. Sites are provided support from supervisors and teachers are offered ongoing coaching to improve their practices and outcomes to provide higher quality services to students and families.
