Newark National Invitational
January 25, 2015
Prudential Center – Newark, NJ
Hosted by St. Benedict’s Prep
For the benefit of the Brian C. Doherty ’66 Scholarship Fund
The Newark National Invitational, one of New Jersey’s premier high school sporting events, which is hosted by St. Benedict’s Prep, makes its return to the Prudential Center on Sunday, January 25th.
The NNI spent its first five years at The Rock before a one-year hiatus at Essex County College last year. This year’s 7th edition of the Invitational is again offering a great slate of four games.
The year’s NNI will open at 1 p.m. with a girls’ game featuring a mainstay in the NNI, Shabazz, the reigning and six-time New Jersey Tournament of Champions winner, taking on a first-time participant, East Orange, at 1 p.m. Shabazz will play for the first time in 32 seasons without Vanessa Watson, the esteemed coach who retired this past offseason after racking up 720 career victories. She is being succeeded by one of her former players, Jania Sims.
The first of three boys’ game will commence at 2:45 p.m. with Gill St. Bernard’s tipping off against Newark East Side, followed by the 4:30 tilt pitting Pope John of Sparta against Newark’s University. The marquee matchup is a rematch of last year’s NNI when St. Benedict’s takes on Roselle Catholic at 6:15. St. Benedict’s and Roselle Catholic are both ranked nationally, as are the Shabazz girls.
The NNI has been a showcase for future college and NBA players such as Tyler Ennis (Phoenix Suns), Kyrie Irving (Cleveland Cavaliers), DeMarcus Cousins (Sacramento Kings), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Charlotte Hornets), Lance Stephenson (Charlotte Hornets), Tristan Thompson (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Kyle Anderson (San Antonio Spurs).
This year’s edition is again loaded with some of the top talent, not only in New Jersey, but in the country. The NNI will feature a number of nation’s top teams, including Roselle Catholic, winner of the Non-Public B title the last two years; St. Benedict’s Prep, which has competed in two of the last three National High School Invitational’s; and the Shabazz girls, champions of the last seven Group 2 state girls titles to go along with a state-record 6 TOC titles.
