21st Century Mission

Mission: To provide high quality afterschool programming for Newark Public middle school students at Dr. E. Alma Flagg, University High School, Eagle Academy and Belmont Runyon Elementary School in a safe and educational environment that offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that will complement their academic performance; and offers literacy, social and emotional skills that will inform their college and career choices while offering an array of services to the families of participating children.

  • Vision: To present to the community well rounded students whose behavior is a reflection of the life skills they have learned during the Soaring Scholars Afterschool program.
  • Motto: Catering to Kids for Connections to College and Careers!

Goal 1: Increase students’ career and college readiness by offering high quality remediation activities in core areas such as:

    1. Academic Enrichment
    2. Character Education
    3. Community Service
    4. Parental Involvement
    5. Youth development experiences
    6. Tutoring/Homework
    7. Job Development
    8. Physical Activity

Goal 2: Increase positive student behavior with  social, emotional and character development programming.

Goal 3: Engage adult family members of participating 21st CCLC students through participation in an array of parental involvement activities including but not limited to:

  1. Cooking classes
  2. Financial literacy programs
  3. Entrepreneurship classes
  4. Family oriented field trips

Goal 4: Establish and maintain partnerships and collaborative relationships to ensure participants access to all available resources through coordinated efforts and to sustain programs.  

The Office of Expanded Learning Time (ELT) oversees the administration and implementation of the majority of district-run after school programs, initiatives, and the Dr. Marion A. Bolden Student Center.
