Steve Morlino is the Executive Director of Facilities Management for the Newark Board of Education. Prior to his Newark appointment, Mr. Morlino was the Executive Director of Facilities Management for the past 5 years for the Paterson Public Schools. He was previously with the Newark Public Schools for fifteen years, managing the departments of Design & Construction, Facilities Support, SLT Services, Facilities Management and Project Control. He has over 38 years’ experience in facilities operations management of health care institutions, public schools and charter schools.
Prior to his NJ positions, he was the Borough Manager for the NYC Board of Education in charge of over 400 schools in Brooklyn (383) and Staten Island (64) overseeing operations for 13 community school districts with 50 million square feet of facilities and a student enrollment of over 400,000. Preceding his educational positions he was Vice President of facilities, engineering and operations of a multi-campus NYC university medical center for over 17 years, which was rated among the top 100 university affiliated health care centers in the country.
He has a degree in HVAC mechanical systems design and holds a NJDCA Master HVACR license and is a LEED Accredited Professional. He is a NJ State DOE certified educational facilities manager and is an instructor for Rutgers Center for Government Services, teaching all of the required Educational Facility Management courses. He is an instructor for the NJASBO School Business Administrator’s plant operations course for School Business Administrator’s and candidates for the SBA license.
He holds a current NJ DEP certified exterminator license with school IPM designation, EPA Accredited asbestos inspector (UMDNJ) and EPA Accredited asbestos management planner (UMDMJ) licenses and is a EPA certified lead paint risk assessor & renovator. He is a EPA IAQ designated person, EPA School Radon certification, EPA universal, mobile and 410a refrigerant certifications. He has been a Faculty member for the US EPA Indoor Air Quality National Symposium and has been a EPA Webinar presenter. He has Engineering licenses for unlimited tonnage and horsepower in NYC and holds a current NJ Blue Seal Engineers license.
He is the founding President of the Essex/Hudson County Chapter of the NJ School Buildings and Grounds Association and headed the Certification Committee for the state association. He is a member of the National School Plant Management Association (NSPMA), member of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) and he has served as a judge for American School & University magazine, judging award winning school architectural projects.
Under Mr. Morlino’s leadership the Newark Public Schools was a 5 time recipient of the National ASBO Facilities Masters Award, received the EPA IAQ Tools for Schools National Excellence Award and the EPA National Mentorship Award.
He has testified as an expert in facilities management and has published several documents on fire disaster recovery, natural disasters, epidemic outbreaks, principal guides and pest management as related to facilities operations in schools and hospitals.
Steve was born in Newark and is a lifelong New Jersey resident.
