Entering his 28th year as an educator, Matthew J. Brewster began his career as a teacher at South 17th Street School in Newark and quickly rose through the ranks to serve as a School Management Team supervisor in School Leadership Team V, and a vice principal and principal at Vailsburg Middle School. In 2006, he was appointed director of Staff Development by then superintendent, Dr. Marion A. Bolden. After spending the last several years providing operational support first to the high schools as a special assistant and then all district schools as deputy executive director and executive director, Matthew brings to the table a wealth of professional expertise and institutional knowledge across the K-12 continuum as he returns to lead the re-envisioned Office of Staff Development.
Matthew earned a BA in History from Morehouse College (’92), a MA in Urban School Leadership from New York University (’05) and has done post graduate work at Seton Hall University. He holds Elementary (K-8) and Secondary (Social Studies) teaching credentials as well as certifications as a Supervisor, Principal, School Administrator and School Safety Specialist.
Matthew is married to Tricia Brewster, a school counselor in the district. The couple are the proud parents of three children, Matthew James (14), Malachi Jadon (12) and Inez McKenzie (10).
