David Scutari was born and raised in Glen Ridge, New Jersey where he attended the Glen Ridge Public Schools. Upon graduating from Glen Ridge High School, he spent the next three years at Pennsylvania State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance; graduating with distinction. At the conclusion of his undergraduate work, Mr. Scutari began his journey into the field of education by enrolling in Montclair State University for the first of two Master of Arts degree programs he would complete at the university.
Mr. Scutari began his teaching career at Glen Ridge High School, assuming a maternity fill-in position, before securing a permanent role as a mathematics teacher at University High School in Newark, NJ. As a teacher at UHS, Mr. Scutari facilitated the Saturday program, revamped the AP Calculus curriculum, and saw his students earn scholarships to the nation’s most prestigious colleges and universities, including Cornell University, Boston College, and Harvard University. After years of successful teaching, Mr. Scutari made his foray into school administration when he was promoted to Mathematics Department Chairperson. Within this role, he raised student achievement in mathematics through direct supervision and coaching of 11 staff members, redesigning the course sequence, and continuing to teach the AP Calculus course he devised. In his final year at University High School, Mr. Scutari was promoted to Vice Principal, where he was able to extend his reach across all departments and directly shape school climate and culture.
For the next four years, Mr. Scutari worked at the Newark Public Schools’ central office focusing primarily on elementary education. His work as a Special Assistant spanned several disciplines including staffing, curriculum, assessment, coaching, professional development, community outreach, and strategic planning. Through his work, the teachers and schools with which he worked showed significant gains in student achievement in both literacy and mathematics when compared to both their peers and the state at large.
For the last two years, Mr. Scutari has served as Principal of Mount Vernon School. During this time, he has continued the tradition of celebrating academic excellence and diversity by implementing a co-teaching model of instruction for Bilingual Spanish and English as a Second Language education that has resulted in dramatic academic gains for English Language Learners. He has also radically increased the co-curricular programming available to students, including the addition of Boys and Girls Basketball, Robotics, EcoSpaces, Girl Scouts, My Very Own Library, Newark Kids Code, and several other clubs and activities. Additionally, Mr. Scutari has supported the greater Mount Vernon School community through the implementation of a partnership with Table to Table that is responsible for providing fresh fruit and vegetables to hundreds of Newark families weekly.
Mr. Scutari is very excited and eager to bring his expertise and passion for student learning to the role of Executive Assistant to the Superintendent.
