Shayvonne Anderson was born and raised in Newark and attended Newark Public Schools. She is the mother of ten children who also attended public schools in Newark. After being a stay-at-home mom for a few years, Shayvonne went on to further her education at Gibbs College (Secretarial Arts) and also attended Drake Business College where she earned her certificate to be a Certified Dental Assistant. Shayvonne is also a survivor of domestic violence abuse, a mentor for young women, and a soon to be published author. In 2017 she founded Healing Her, a Women’s Abuse Support Group, and it is through years of mentoring other women through Healing Her that she realized that the work collectively begins at home and in our schools. Shayvonne is also a mentor for Big Brother/Big Sisters of NJ and a parent and education advocate.
Shayvonne believes that every child in Newark deserves the kind of education in that really “sees them” and unlocks their potential. As a Board Member of the Newark Board of Education, she will fight to make sure all children have access to that kind of education. She will also advocate on behalf of every child in Newark the way she has for her children.
It took years for Board Member Anderson to build herself up through; writing her autobiography, personal and development, professional development, advocacy training, community activism, and Parent Council leadership, for her to realize that we can best effect change for our children by fighting for policies that are centered around social-emotional learning. She met hundreds of Newark residents, who like herself, want to be part of the decision making process. She will ensure every parent, grandparent, guardian, and student has a stake in the budget and education policies. She will give her all every day, because her community, especially children deserve the best in education.
