Debate gives the student a chance to simulate discussion about government policy, current events, and/or ethical issues in a competitive format. Students will research and prepare arguments regarding a proposal for change.
Example
Topic: The US federal government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives within the United States.
- Student would defend either the affirmative (“yes, the government should”) or the negative (“no, they should not”).
- Students will prepare a variety of arguments about the topic in order to compete at tournaments.
- At tournaments, debaters will debate several rounds against students from all over the city, region, and eventually the country. They must be ready for the affirmative and the negative.
