Shavar Jeffries has established the Donna Johnson Memorial Scholarship to support the educational development of a young person who has experienced the loss of a parent, guardian, or loved one because of domestic violence, or whose life has otherwise been touched by violence against women. As a witness to and survivor of domestic violence, Shavar was blessed with the opportunity to obtain a life-changing education, and the Donna Johnson Memorial Scholarship seeks to ensure that other young people have the same opportunity.
Eligibility and Requirements
The following outlines the scholarship eligibility requirements:
High School senior or high school graduate entering college in the Fall of 2015 with documentation proving admission to an institute of higher education (community college, four year college or university, technical/vocational school or accredited online university)
Resident of Essex County, New Jersey
High School transcript verifying a 2.5 GPA or better

Exhibit passion around community service, ideally within the domestic violence arena through documented community service and volunteerism efforts
Submit an essay (minimum 500 words but not to exceed 1000 words) describing how the applicant has overcome challenges presented as a result of their experience with domestic violence
Scholarship awards will be sent directly to the winner’s college to help cover tuition or associated costs.
Completed applications must be submitted via the website by June 1, 2015.
