Debate is one of the oldest sports in the world - it came from the old french word, debatre, which means to fight. It has traveled from the realm of politics to the realm of education. In debate, we draft arguments for both sides of an argument, construct impromptu speeches, gather empirical evidence, and cross-examine our opponents to weaken their contentions. Though debate is a time-consuming activity, it is a very fruitful experience, as we gain research abilities, the capacity to comprehend other people’s perspectives, public speaking skills, and the ability to be competitive and cooperative.
