Welcome New Vice Principal
Mr. Moncur was born and raised in the city of Newark with deep family roots and ties to Newark’s Jazz heritage, his father being Grachan Moncur III, the renowned composer, and trombonist. \n\nMr. Kenya Moncur graduated 8th grade from Morton Street School in 1987, and St. Benedict’s Prep High School in 1991 both located in Newark, NJ. He received his BA in Education from Kean College, his MAT in Math from Montclair State, and his Ed.S from Walden University. \n\nMr. Moncur held the position of Elementary Math Supervisor in the EOSD from 2016-2020 before returning back to the Newark Public Schools in 2021. In his 25 years of education he has worked as a classroom teacher, enrichment coordinator; adult education teacher, and math coach; while serving as the head wrestling coach at Shabazz High School and Linden High school in New Jersey.\n\n\nMr.Moncur’s mission this year as Vice-Principal of 13th Avenue School is to engage all scholars while focusing on getting students to make improvements in mathematical fluency. Setting up systems to support learners, to maximize their achievement, by raising the bar of academic excellence across all subject areas, by introducing students to rich task, inquiry-based instruction, through the 5E instructional model. His leadership style is to be overtly student-focused, possessing a strong commitment to the development of all students, by supporting a stimulating, safe, and motivating learning environment that will allow learners to meet their grade-level expectations. \n\nMr. Kenya Moncur is a trustworthy, reliable, professional with the proper tools to develop strong and lasting relationships with all stakeholders. He is considered a dynamic visionary that believes in collaborating with the school faculty, and community, having the goal of increasing excellence in education. His mission is to support staff members and students by acknowledging and addressing their needs, intellect, and their character. \n\nMr. Moncur is a family man as well. He has a 15-year-old daughter Kai, a 25-year-old son Kenya along with his wonderful wife Taneisha. His greatest fulfilling accomplishment is his community work with Pastor I. W. Artis Jr, of the Church of God and Saints of Christ, as well as supporting The House of Love Soup Kitchen/ Pantry which serves 100’s of people from Newark, East Orange, and the surrounding area. This organization was founded in 2008 by his deceased brother Toih Moncur, and is currently being directed by Ms. Tamam Tracy Moncur, his mom. \n\nIn 2015 Mr.Moncur received the Superintendent’s club award in the Linden Public schools for all of his Algebra students passing the standardized state assessment. Mr. Moncur has traveled abroad to visit educational facilities in Nigeria, Canada, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Grand Bahama Island, and South Africa, with the goal of helping to develop young leaders in this country with universal skill sets.
