Robert Gregory, a native son of the city of Newark and a product of Newark Public Schools, is the Interim Superintendent of the Newark Public Schools (NPS). On February 1, he began serving as the Interim Superintendent of New Jersey’s largest school district.
After attending Harriet Tubman Elementary School in Newark’s South Ward, Robert’s mother moved him outside of the city in search of a quality middle school. Since coming back to Newark after college, his career has been dedicated to ensuring that no parent ever feels they have to leave Newark to find a great school for their child.
Prior to serving as Interim, Robert was appointed the Deputy Superintendent of the Newark Public Schools in June of 2017. In this role he managed the strategic planning processes and professional development of school principals and assistant superintendents, while supporting the District’s successful transition to local control. Previously, Mr. Gregory served as the Assistant Superintendent overseeing the District’s 15 High Schools. During his time in this position, he worked with principals to improve college matriculation systems, increased graduation rates 10 percentage points, and saw significant gains in SAT scores across schools.
Robert was also the founding principal of American History High School, established in 2007. When founded, the school became the fifth magnet school in Newark and first of its kind in New Jersey. As Principal, Gregory maintained a 94% or above graduation rate throughout his tenure, of which at least 90% of students gained admissions to and attended college. The school also quadrupled the number of Advanced Placement and Honors courses during this time. Under Gregory’s leadership, American History High School was ranked amongst the nation’s best high schools receiving its first Silver Medal and National Ranking in the 2015 U.S. News World Report’s Best High Schools in America. Robert has also served as a teacher, teacher coach, and supervisor during his tenure at NPS.
Mr. Gregory graduated from West Chester University in Pennsylvania with a BA in Secondary Education, Social Studies, and is a graduate of Seton Hall University with an MA in Educational Leadership and Management. As the proud father of 3 children who married a lifelong Newarker, Gregory is truly a homegrown leader. Education runs in his family; his father was a teacher; vice principal and principal in Newark for 25 years; and his wife is an educator as well.
With over 20 years of service to the Newark Public Schools and the city, Robert is continually reminded of the importance of history and carrying on family traditions and legacies while ensuring all students that surround him are afforded a quality public education that will enable them to thrive in a competitive 21st century global economy.
