Life is Just A Minute
– By Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays

Life is just a minute – only sixty seconds in it.
Forced upon you – can’t refuse it.
Didn’t seek it – didn’t choose it.
But it’s up to you to use it.
You must suffer if you lose it.
Give an account if you abuse it.
Just a tiny, little minute,
But eternity is in it!

I’ve dedicated the last 18 years of my life to educating children in the great city of Newark. It is without reservation that I can truly say that every second that I used to educate, mentor, and coach students, families and staff was time well spent. I count the opportunities that I have been afforded an honor and life calling.

I began my journey in Newark as a classroom teacher. I have 10 years of teaching experience across grades 4 through 8. I’ve taught in both self-contained and departmentalized environments of which 6 years were spent as a math and science teacher. As Math Coach I supported all math teachers (K-8) before being promoted to Resource Teacher Coordinator for the West Region of NPS. In this capacity I support math teachers across 20 schools and provided thousands of hours of professional development for teachers, math coaches and administrators across the district. Currently, I am the Vice Principal of Lincoln School where we are “Shaping Tomorrow’s Leaders.”

One of my major responsibilities is to assist in enhancing the middle level experience for our students. Our goal is to design and sustain a supportive learning environment that supports the academic as well as the social/emotional development of the adolescent student. We are committed to meeting the needs of all the students we serve by providing the following:

We are always looking for ways to enhance our Middle Level Program and would love to hear your ideas. I will host “Family Time” on every 3rd Monday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. beginning in October. It will be a time for coffee, donuts and dialogue carved out just for you. All are welcome!
