Bruce Street School for the Deaf, one of the oldest (100 years old) day programs in the country serving deaf children, offers hearing-impaired students, ages 3-15, a superior education close to their homes. Students attend from throughout the city, as well as from neighboring towns and counties. The profound handicap of deafness results in isolation, severe deficient language development, and a lack of general knowledge. Students receive ongoing intensive speech and language therapy, as well as instruction in all academic areas. All subjects are taught utilizing the Total Communication philosophy, which stresses speech and speech reading, auditory training, sign language, and finger spelling. Students receive a full-range of audiological services on-site by licensed audiologists, also skilled in sign language. Auditory amplification is available to all students in all situations inside and out of the classroom during the school day through the Phonic Ear wireless FM auditory training system. On-site audiologists also closely monitor students with cochlear implants and work closely with all hospitals in the area to make sure students receive the maximum benefit from their implants at all times. All students receive speech therapy as mandated by their I.E.Ps (Individualized Educational Plans). Physical and occupational therapy is available to students based on evaluation and as mandated in their I.E.P.
The world that deaf children will inherit will be technology based, and technology is a pre-requisite for success in our society. Therefore, Bruce Street’s goal is to enable its students to utilize all the tools of technology in order to explore and widen their world. Bruce Street students are immersed in technology when they enter as preschoolers. The technology program has been recognized throughout the State and featured on television and in national publications. Students have access to a multimedia computer lab, Eno Boards, access to TTY’s, captioned cable television, and a complete curriculum in life skills and technology. In addition, four or more computers, at least one with access to the Internet, are available in each classroom for student and teacher use. Students produce multimedia projects in subject areas across the curriculum, including television news shows. Students are actively involved in telecommunications projects and communicate with other students across the United States and in other countries.
Bruce Street students in grades 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 have the opportunity to participate in a Mathematics and Science Inclusion Program with George Washington Carver students in accordance with least restrictive environment mandates. Bruce Street students may also participate in all clubs and afterschool programs with George Washington Carver students.
The primary resource for the literacy K-5 curriculum is the Harcourt Trophies literacy series and the primary resource for the 6-8 literacy curriculum is the McDougal Littell literacy series. These programs support instruction in reading, vocabulary, language, and writing. Students are engaged in a balanced literacy program five days a week for 100 minutes each day. The primary resource for the K-5 mathematics curriculum is the Everyday Math program and the primary resource for the 6-8 mathematics curriculum is the Connected Math program. Bruce Street offers students a rigorous course of study that is aligned with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards.
