South Street School utilizing the Newark Public Schools Unit Plans for ELA along with Foundations to provide balanced literacy instruction to our students in Grades K-2.
The NPS Unit Plans were developed by a team of Newark’s outstanding educators. Wilson Foundations for K-3 is a phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics and spelling program for the general education classroom. Foundations is based upon the Wilson Reading System® principles and serves as a prevention program to help reduce reading and spelling failure.
Grades 3-5 uses Expeditionary Learning- EL schools inspire the motivation to learn, engage teachers, and students in new levels of focus and effort, and transform schools into places where students and adults become leaders of their own learning. We provide a model that challenges students – even those starting with low skill levels – with high-level tasks and active roles in the classroom. This model succeeds in urban, rural, and suburban schools and at every grade level.
