Board Member Khalil Sabu Rashidi was born and raised in Newark, and educated in the Newark Public Schools, where he attended schools in all five wards. Khalil is a graduate of the Newark Boys Chorus School and a graduate of East Side High. He is also a graduate of Rutgers New Brunswick.
Khalil has been employed at UMDNJ for 22 years and is currently the Health Educator and Counselor for the Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine New Jersey Medical School. He is a member of UMDNJ Community Outreach Committee; a member of the Newark Municipal Council Health Sub-Committee; a volunteer and mentor at Maple Ave School in the Brotherhood Mentoring Program; a martial arts instructor at Newark Boys Chorus School (5th degree Black Belt in Chinese Kenpo. Khalil is also a trustee at the Newark Boys Chorus School and president of Lower Shephard Ave Block Association.
Khalil is a distinguished Leadership Newark Fellow and while an advocate for local control of public schools, he is a strong supporter of excellent schools that work for children albeit traditional or charter. He believes that all students must be prepared for 21st century career opportunities so he advocates for strong math and science curriculum for all students. Khalil is also a proponent of strengthening parent-student interdependent relationships.
Khalil is a homeowner in the Southward and is married with three children attending schools in Newark.
